Well I know this is a bit late but heres a quick recap of race day and the moments leading up to it and after it….
So it has definitly been a chore this year staying consistent with my triathlon training so I didn’t feel as prepared as I would have liked for my race. In addition to this, about a week out my lovely knees decided to become so inflamed that I was in terrible pain and put on complete rest. Crossing my fingers everyday in hope I would get to my race I really did everything I possibly could…..ice, rest, compression, rest… did I say rest!?!? Well with the help of my Enerskin sleeves I was off to my race.
Barely slept the night before I checked and triple checked my gear bag. I had so many check lists and post- it’s, it actually got comical. Alarm went off, got dressed, made my famous tea and off I went onto the shuttle bus. About half way there the traffic was crazy so I decided to jump out and walk it because I knew I needed time at transition and I was one of the first in the water so hustle hustle!!!!
Finally got to transition, set up my gear…nervous as hell but trying to stay calm at the same time…about four trips to the bathroom…tmi…sorry….wetsuit on and off I went! The water temp was nice actually and the group of women I was with were just so awesome! Fight Song was playing and all the girls started singing and dancing… it was quite a site…we were basically between two male groups…not the fun part….but I digress. Before we went in, I met a women named Karen. What a story she had. A year ago to date she was in a coma for three months and now look where she was! Simply amazing! We stayed together for some of the swim and then I was off again. I was so focused and in my rhythm i almost veered off the course a bit. But with the guidance of the most awesome life guards …I made it out safe and sound!
T1….Wetsuit off…cycle gear on….off I go! I was feeling really strong on the bike which wasn’t the norm for me, especially because I was on my new tri bike and I only had limited practice on it, but I locked in and was pushing right along. My nutrition was on point…Carbo Pro, Base salts, Gatorade, fruit bar and a Lara bar. All was great I was making great time….and then mile 20 on the bike I was having the worst pain in my inner thigh. I kept standing and sitting and trying to shake out whatever it was, but it was to no avail. Finishing this race was my only option..so onward I pushed. I came in about 17 minutes past my goal time on the bike but I was ok with that.
T2….Cycle gear off…run gear on…lets go baby! home stretch!!! I was hurting pretty bad and it was 100 degrees and the humidity was bearing down on all of us but onward and upward was the only choice. The aid stations that Delmo Sports provided at every mile and a half were key out there, and the volunteers were simply my angels that day. I stopped every aid station…shoved cold wet sponges down my kit, ice chips in my mouth, water on my head and flat soda to keep me going….I had my jelly beans on me if I needed as well. I have to say it was my slowest half to date but I met so many people on the run…it was really cool to just be able to take it all in. At one point there was this crew of people singing Adele songs to me as I flew by them twice! It was really funny. All the spectators were amazing! The police who not only kept us safe but also kept those showers running while we ran through them to cool off on the boardwalk, were simply amazing!
Finish Line Ahead…..and there it was…the infamous finish line. The red carpet if you will. People yelling and cheering and cowbells ringing…it was a site to see and hear….and through the finishers chute I went! I cried my eyes out and I was hugging everyone…like everyone lol!
All in all it was one amazing race and day! They say you never forget your first and IM sure I won’t!
